NEWS & EVENTS

- Updated August 2005 -

2005 has been a “sensation-al” year with a deliberate attempt to absorb and learn as much as I possibly could.

January 2005

AQC in Melbourne at the beginning of the year was an interesting insight into the world of Quilters and I can see how seeds of thought were planted and developed during the year.

April

Orange for Jean Littlejohn’s Workshop was a compressed week of fun in the new Forum venue.

I learnt tons more about Vliesofix and met truly nice people again. Thanks for their company.

The trip to the U.K. was very special. The trip to the U.K. was very special.

The Forum coincided with the Fairfield Art Gallery’s Exhibition of our work in the Dorothy Caldwell’s Workshops.

May

The trip to the U.K. was very special.

I stayed in very nice places and spent all my time drawinging and sketching objets d’art whether it was in Harvey Nicks, Fendi or the Victoria Albert. One highlight was the Matisse Exhibition at the Royal Academy where the focus was on the Textiles he used in his work. It was overwhelmingly beautiful and struck intimate chords for me.

The Lakes District was breathtakingly beautiful. I drove around listening to Wordsworth Sonnets. Stopped the car and walked off into the hills and lakes and sketched and painted for 2 weeks. A salmon sandwich by an old church near Beatrix Potter’s home tastes utterly different.

June

Kansas was again a great learning place. I now really know a lot of people and I find the whole atmosphere stimulating. I enjoyed Dorothy Caldwell’s class in a new medium to me and again, the people in the class were a real find. I have a CD that one of the members of the class made of all our work, Splendid.

My work “Illumination” hung in the SDA Group Exhibition and there is a sense-ational Disk I have of that also. WOW. Great company to be in. More news on developments from there later.

There was a large Australian contingent this year and you’ll see familiar faces in the image from the Shibori class I took with Yoshiko Wada (check the images in the News & Travel section).

July

New York in summer was a new experience for me but I loved the Big Apple all over again. Such conversations, sights and opportunities. Just some of them were drawing in Central Park and a visit to the Jewish Museum to see Maurice Sendak’s Exhibition of exquisite watercolours done for everything from my children’s favourite book “Where the Wild Things Are” to costumes and sets for “The Magic Flute.”

San Francisco and environs is still one off my favourite places in the world. I just think it is beautiful and Art is everywhere. It was good to catch up on my old friend Joan Schulze who was a gracious hostess again and we saw ATW in the Legion D’Honeur, clothing spectaculars and I particularly liked the buildings in the Little Italy section-Coppola’s own Flatiron Building is breathtaking.

August

Home has been an extraordinary experience with a sudden last minute rush to get my Edwardian Mantlette piece “Hybrid” off to the Victorian Quilters’ Show. I am so delighted the piece won first prize in the “Gild the Lily-Fabric Art for the Body” section. I am now the proud owner of a new Pfaff machine as well as my fantastic Bernina.

I would like to thank my friend, artist and mentor Carole Redlich who continues to support and inspire me. More news of our joint venture soon.

I also received a copy of Kirry Toose’s brainchild, the postcard book “ A Bit on the Side.” All the lovely work in there and my foray in to jewellery “Throw Caution to the Wind” sparkling alongside everyone elses. Gifted Kirry has yet again come up with a great idea and I am glad to have participated in the ongoing Exhibition.

A gracious invitation from Kirry Toose had me scratching my brain working towards my first, major piece of jewellery. “Throw Caution to the Wind “ was born. Digitised “pouffes” sandwiched between laminated plastic are interspersed with lamio nated images and objects covered in decals. Text around the smaller neck piece finished off it. I loved making it and thank Kirry. It looks magical in the Book she imagined from beginning to end and now it is off to California.

“Caution and the Wind”-a sculpture in my Totem Series and “Moses ‘ Sister “ a multi media book are both currently on Exhibition at the Melville Arts Centre. The work that Lee Ord does for us here in Perth is tremendous and again I am grateful that we have the opportunity to participate at this high level.

“Taking Flight”- Armour I made for “every woman and child who must take flight.” Has been on Exhibition in the Sydney Art to Wear. It was a more complex design problem because much of the work is done with/on baking paper from The Hague. Inez Fritschy used some of this material when we ironed our work in Mittagong last year and I was fascinated by its surface and colour. Our baking paper seems boring in comparison, however it proved a difficult medium to work with. I learnt a lot and made one more step towards my goal of painterly effects with digitising.

Software and Hardware adventures. I have had an engaging and challenging time researching and following up on loads of software and hardware to help take me the next step in my journey.

I have managed some pretty exciting developments in combination with my watercolour ad oil painting.

Stephen Cohen at Nehoc has been helpful with the new Gocco machine I bought and my results have been surprisingly promising.

September

Teaching. I have decided to get my feet wet again in a new arena. The 84 Group and I are going to wander through image transfer techniques together.

I have worked up some pretty interesting samples I think.

Disperse Dyes have given me the basis for some very painterly samples.

Dye sublimation has proven to be an expense and effort worth every dollar and minute.

These techniques and hardware together should bring about a dramatic new time for my art and textile work.

The Art Quilt group Meeting I attended at Cherry Johnston’s invitation was fun and a sign for me to follow more interesting areas.

The first quilt is under way and should be ready for FibresWest showing in October.

Geelong and FibresWest September. My toolkit (circa 1940) and Dremmel Kit (circa 2005) are all packed and ready to go in anticipation of my Master Class with Michael Brennand-Wood and then Adele Outteridge’s Book Class.

Stay tuned PalosVerdes

3 Art pieces of mine have been accepted for the Exhibition and Competition in the Body Sculpture and Jewellery Section of the Palos Verdes California Art Exhibition. I am pleased to be participating.

Watch this space for the outcomes of this and more in the pipe-line..

October-December

Research, Experiment, Make.

2006 has never sounded more exciting to me.

Come and see if you like.
